Reflections 2006: Reads

It was a weird reading year. I mostly pecked at different books for the sole purpose of self betterment or message prep rather than for pleasure. Not so good. Nonetheless, here are my top reads of 2006 in no particular order…

Telling the Truth: The Gospel as Tragedy, Comedy & Fairytale – Fredrich Beuchner

Colossians Remixed – Walsh and Keesmat

Culture Jam – Kalle Lasn

Invisible Lines of Connection – Lawrence Kushner

Spiritual Direction – Henri Nouwen

Dominion and Dynasty (Still in Progress…) – Stephen Dempster

In the queue for 2007: (and hopefully this lopsided list will diversify to include some fiction and other genres…)

Celebration of Discipline – Richard Foster

The Last Word – NT Wright

What Saint Paul Really Said – NT Wright

The Creed – Luke Timothy Johnson

Contemplative Prayer – Thomas Merton

Spiritual Direction and Meditation – Thomas Merton

Eat This Book – Eugene Peterson

Christ Plays in Ten Thousand Places – Eugene Peterson

Transforming Mission – Bosch

was one of my favorites of 2006, read it 2 months ago
it will definitely move you towards appreciating scripture as well as give you better lenses and approach to read it with.
looking forward to “Christ plays in 1000 places”
apperently the 3rd in the series is out soon in 2007

joe… great book list.
on the fiction side… try dabbling in some Douglas Coupland if you haven’t already. I read Hey Nostradamus! and it was fantastic. I also hear Life After God is a good one. Also, do yourself a favour and go ahead and buy Wise Blood by Flannery O’Connor for amazingly spiritual fiction– almost allegorical. just trust me.

let me know what you think of Christ Plays in 10000 Places… i have the book, haven’t gotten to it yet… love the Gerald Manley Hopkins poem he borrows from for the title of the book…

it was great seeing you last week…
