between the river and the ravens i’m fed

i abhor worship/christian music. the genre in itself is anything but sacred, the song lyrics often read like a betty crocker recipe and the sounds are about as inventive as tic-tac-toe strategies. perhaps i’m painting with broad brush strokes, but i find this multi million dollar enterprise anything but inspiring.

however…

i’ve came across an album this week that i haven’t stopped listening to since monday: dustin kensrue’s (from thrice) ‘please come home’. for the most part this is a deeply spiritual album about Jesus. sounds johnny cash-ish and dylan-esque - nothing ground breaking, but catchy. lyrical content explores themes such as the eucharist, tells the story of the prodigal son and pulls the sheets back on experiences of doubt and faith.

to me, these are sacred songs. songs that posture my heart toward heaven…even though the author readily (and authentically) admits that it seems that ‘the devil rents a room in [his] head’.

song of the day for me was ‘consider the ravens’. it goes something like this…

“Between the river and ravens I’m fed
Between oblivion and blazes I’m led
So Father give me faith, providence and grace
Between the river and ravens I’m fed
Sweet deliverer, oh you lift up my head
and lead me in your way”

btw, Lent is upon us. goodbye tv and movies ’til easter.

i’m with you on the flaky, consumer-driven nature of the “Christian” music industry… don’t get me started on it.

few bands can truly draw my thoughts/heart beyond the music, heavenward… pedro the lion (especially the “Whole” ep) definitely can…

being at regent, i’m rediscovering (or simply discovering?) the beauty and sacredness of many hymns. it’s been an amazing resurrection of what i once thought dead…

it’s too late, my thoughts are getting very random. (i just deleted a few paragraphs of incoherent babbling…)

g’nite.

Joe,

It’s easy to find what you don’t like about worship music. But what do you like. What do you find redeeming? Is there nothing. I bet you can find something.

When I started reading the post I thought you where going to do like most of the folks I know and say “However, I love David Crowders cd”-Nothing against David, I just dont see how he is so different from other bands under that label.

Joe…I just listened to this dustin guy’s music…not bad. I lead worship every week and I’m bored with what’s out there…I’d have to say that Matt Redman is my fav. one only because he has some depth to his music and Paul Baloche is pretty deep as well, but a lot of the united stuff is so thin like the rest of the stuff out there.

BTW…you should listen to Jamie Hilsden’s new country demo…talk about CASH…it’s realy good…I’ll send you a couple of tracks.

Peace!

Lent = no deserts or TV shows

Funny you mention Dustin Kensrue..I grabbed his CD when it came out nd have been addicted to it since. Learned all the songs, play them all the time. There\’s something so different about it. I love that CD. That\’s about all I have to say about that.
