Branding: Church Plant Style

Our North American culture primarily communicates through image, so that’s why when formulating ideas around a logo then choosing an image that will represent the new community, there’s much that comes into play. Questions like: “How can we best capture our ethos in a wordmark?”; “Is it strong enough to appear on various mediums with ease?”; “Does it have the legs to last for the long haul?”; “Is it freakin’ cool?” :) I approached Jeff Anton (who’s done an excellent job designing artwork for me for the last ten years) with some of my intial thoughts around theStory along with pointers like this: we needed something that denoted the ‘telling of a story’; something that spoke of dialogue; something with a ‘blue collar’ feel; something easily recognizable; something that looked nothing like a church logo.

So with all that in mind, and after much discussion this was the first batch of artwork:

The story_pres7 copy.jpgThe story_pres6 copy.jpgThe story_pres5 copy.jpgThe story_207 copy.jpg

As you can see, Jeff picked up on our needs and strongly suggested the idea of the ’speech bubble’. We jumped all over it, but while the concept was right, none of these first itterations were. Back to the drawing board with round two:

By this point we were close, but not quite there. We definitely had a winner from the bunch, but it still wasn’t perfect. Here are some colour variations of what we decided on.

In our minds, it works and captures all that we’re looking for. Darryl’s not 100% sold, but he’ll come around. :)

Many thanks to Jeff for his patience and expertise, and for those in my handpicked focus group for their two cents. Can’t wait for the day it shows up on a t-shirt…

How about 10 shirts for 1000$?

Logo looks pretty cool! You sticking with that one?

Quesion: I guess you don’t want it to actually say anything about ‘the story’ (gospel) besides what a story entails and actually want to keep the image of your name in people’s minds.

does blood relation get an in on a free T-shirt?? (for the record I’ve worn all your past T’s (paradox and US), so advertizement in other cities should count for something). Wait, I actually bought the US one.

dave:

the logo, for me, is primarily and entry point, a recognizable symbol. it doesn’t have to tell “the whole story”, it’s just a door - that’s it. i don’t think it carries any more weight than that.

and yes, i’ve clothed you well over the years. i think it’s time that you start sending me shrits…

Dave’s shirts are a little too big for you.

I think I like the logo. It looks a little ‘curious george’-ish! I agree that it’s just a door/window. No one will ever get who you are until they open the cover and read further.

for the record. i won’t be coming around…at all

jon:

i wasn’t planning on wearing dave’s shirts, i just needed a cover for my bbq.

as or the logo, yeah, it does have a bit of that ‘curious george’ retro 50’s feel. on that note, i bought the jack johnson curious george album primarily for the jacket artwork. check it out, it’s neat. even the material they used for the case has got an retro feel to it.

funny you say that. I bought it yesterdeay. i saw the movie with Jacob and I loved the music…great words…nice feel! The jacket cover is quite retro!

Speaking of BBQ covers, I’m sure notorious JB has a couple of shirts you could borrow!

Darryl:
What logo or ideas did you have in mind? I’d be interested in seeing them.

Joe: There is nothing shameful in being a ‘Rent-A-Cop’. Just think if you make it big you could work out of Shoppers World in Brampton

Jon: I can’t believe you referenced ‘The Notorious JB’ Just a tremendous joke for a dreary Saturday morning

Comment by Chris — April 22, 2006 @ 5:57 am

which chris just wrote… someone I know?

Joe: I understand your entry point direction… wondering if you wanted more then that (I guess Vintage church’s bowling pin is an entry point while Mosaic’s mosaic with a cross in it is more telling of the larger story). Both are good for both reasons.
What do you think of ours? We’re thinking of NOT redoing it, cause we like it, but reframing it a little.

One thing I like is that your logo is your name and you never have to worry about putting both or wasting space. That’s a plus.

For the record: Curious George had great music, but I didn’t leave that impressed.

dave:

i think vintage faith’s logo/branding is very much reflective of who dan kimball is…his personal style, affinity for bowling, etc. as for mosaic, their logo is a mosaic, so i guess that’s the fit.

for the westside gathering (for those unfamiliar www.thewestsidegathering.com), i’ve always liked the 3 squares, but the text seems a bit bulky. and i think orange is a tough colour (though i really like it with blue) ‘cuz it can be tired looking. but hey, those are personal thoughts only.

as for the mysterious chris, i’ll give you a hint…he once stayed at your old apartment with me when you lived with dom and frank. for the record, frank was cutting his own coldcuts in the kitchen one morning. and also, i ran into that same frank a little while ago a pearson int’l airport…he works there.
